Ricky Gervais is a British comedian. I find him funny. But one thing that surprised me was that he’s an Atheist. And not only that, he makes fun of Christianity.
I had watched his videos on YouTube and saw that not only once he made fun of Christianity. But what hits me the most is his story about when they were a kid. I’m not sure if this is true or just one of his crafts to make the audience laugh.
In that story, when they were a kid when he still believes in God, he was asked by his brother why does he believe in God. And when their mother heard his brother’s question, their mother asked his brother to shut up. And Ricky said that he knew that his mother is hiding something and that he became an Atheist in the next hour.
I’m not sure if this is true but what I’m certain is that this scenario really happens Christian families.
While we profess that we are Christians, some of us don’t know why they are Christians. It could be because they just inherited their religion from their parents and they didn’t bothered to learn about their religion.
It is what you call a blind faith. You believe but don’t know why.
But the problem is that when we are questioned with our faith. There is a danger if you can’t defend or even just explain your faith. Either you’ll start to have questions with your faith or the one asking you will be discouraged, especially if it is an innocent question from your child.
I once heard from my teacher when I was in High School that we don’t have to be an expert in the Bible. Note that it was a Catholic School. I don’t know why I didn’t forget that statement.
And that is a very dangerous advice to kids.
I realized that you will only advise that if you yourself don’t know anything about the Bible. Because if you do, you will know the importance of studying the Bible.
You don’t have to be a monk or a Bible student to defend your faith. Just study your Bible diligently and pray for the Holy Spirit’s guidance so that when someone asked you about your faith, whether innocently or maliciously, you’ll be able to defend and explain it. It will benefit both of you because you know what you believe in and you will be stronger in your faith.
And you will not have a child like Ricky Gervais.
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
