Matthew 5:13 – “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.”

This verse was spoken by our Lord Jesus Himself. He was speaking about one of the most important roles of Christians; preserving the world.

As the world gets old, it is slowly rotting; physically, morally, and spiritually. Our goal as a Christian is more on preserving the world morally and spiritually. But we have a responsibility on preserving the earth too.

The Lord did a great job on choosing a representation about preservation. He used the salt to represent Christians. Salt is used to preserve meat and even ice.

A long time ago, when refrigerator is not yet invented, people use salt to preserve meat to consume it for a longer time.

Salt is also used in ice to slow down the melting.

As Christians, we are used by God to preserve the world and mankind to slow down the process of “decaying”. I used “slow down” instead of “prevent” because, as Christians, we know that rotting of the world is inevitable. It is written in the Bible. It is already prophesied that the “world” will decompose (spiritually) because mankind will embrace immorality and reject God, thus pouring His wrath upon the earth (Revelation 16:1).

Because of this, you might think what’s the use of being a salt if the rotting is inevitable?

We are assigned to spread the word, not to save everybody. Although God wants everybody to be saved (1 Timothy 2:4), Jesus Himself wasn’t able to make everybody believe in Him in His time here on earth. So what more can we do? Our duty is to do what God has ordered us; to share and to convert as many people as we can, especially our loved ones.

I can’t help to mention the movie The Terminator by Arnold Schwarzenegger. The watchers along with the movie’s lead characters thought that the Terminator’s mission is to stop the Judgment Day, which is the nuclear war. But on the movie’s third installment, we learned that the Judgment Day is inevitable and his mission is to save John Connor who will lead mankind’s resistance against the machines.

Christians’ mission is like that. Although we know that the world is heading towards decaying and a lot of people will still be punished, we do all we can to get our loved ones from God’s wrath.

So how can we be a salt that preserves the world? We can do this by discouraging our peers to do immorality and sin.

We can also be salt by inspiring other people to do good.

And the last but definitely not the least, and it’s maybe the most important of all, we can be salt by being a role model to others. We don’t have to preach the gospel all the time, but we can be a role model every time. Let others be blessed just by seeing us, hearing us and being with us. Doing His will is like preaching His word through our acts.

If you have other ways in mind how to exercise being the salt of the earth, please let us know.☺
